I'm going to be walking with my Mom and Dad along with other families in the hopes to raise funds for my favorite place in the world, Camp Nejeda, where everyone else is like me. Along with joining the walkathon, I am also raising money for Camp Nejeda, where children with Type 1 Diabetes can be themselves!

When you have T1D, your body stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. Managing the disease is a hard thing to do, and it involves monitoring your blood-sugar level, giving insulin, and carefully balancing insulin doses with your eating and activity. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure.

Here's my story:

One day I was at the library with my dad when I was 4 years old. I had to go to the bathroom minutes after arriving, and I had to go again a few more times after that. We were only there for a half hour. My parents brought me to the doctor and after a quick blood test, it was suspected that I had diabetes. We drove straight to the hospital where I stayed for several days. I was officially diagnosed on 12/2/2017.

Now it's just a normal thing in my life. I am 10 years old, and friends don't even seem to notice that I have T1D. Even though managing this disease is difficult at times, I'm strong and growing like a weed. I'm able to do what all other 10-year olds can do! I especially love trampoline, gymnastics, crafting, jewelry making, and lots of other fun stuff! Every year we do something special on December 2nd, which is my "DIA-versary". We celebrate my bravery, and remember how far we've come and how much we've learned since I was diagnosed.

Best of all, last year was my first of many many visits to Camp Nejeda, where all of the kids and counselors are Type 1 Diabetics just like me! It instantly became my happiest place on earth, because everyone "gets it" and knows exactly what it's like to be me. This summer I spent the whole week there by myself, and can't wait to do it again next summer... with my family, AND by myself!

Please consider walking with us, or even supporting the walk virtually. Even a small donation will make an immediate and lasting impact for kids with Type 1 Diabetes!

I appreciate your love an support!!

Thank you so much,

Sara
